A Note on Forging Your Own Path
By definition, to forge is to: "make or shape (a metal object) by heating it in a fire or furnace and beating or hammering it."
Maybe, as a little girl, you were taught to put on a pretty party dress, leave your hair down (but tame that mess please, and pull it out of your eyes), and match your socks to your patent leather shoes. Were you told to hush, to use your indoor voice? Not to be bossy? Not to talk back when someone offended you? Perhaps you were taught to smile pretty and be polite (but speak up please, no one can hear you).
No wonder you were painfully shy. No wonder you have a perfection complexity.
Maybe, as an adolescent, you were made fun of for wearing a shirt you loved, but one that you found in the boys department. Were you looked down on for not having a boyfriend? For not developing physically as much as the other girls? For not being "cool" enough? Perhaps you were picked on for being the only one in the class who got an A on every test.
No wonder you had hidden self esteem issues. No wonder you still get a little nervous wearing something "different" to work.
Maybe, as a young adult, you were told you would never make it in your chosen career. Were you told that it was rude to be direct? That it wasn't okay to dream of a non-traditional career path? Perhaps you dealt with emotionally abusive partners.
No wonder you were overly competitive. No wonder you have anxiety issues and decision fatigue.
You know what, I hear you. But now is the time to put all that behind you. Put that messy hair up, or let it be wild. Take off that frilly party dress and put on what makes you feel like YOU, whether that's jeans and a t-shirt, or a Givenchy dress. Speak up, be a bitch if you have to. Don't just ask for what you want, demand it. Screw being a lady, do your thing, whatever that looks like. Don't waste your time trying to prove yourself to the people who never believed in you, they don't matter anymore. It may sound cliché, but this life is yours, and yours alone. You are the sole person dictating how it goes. You want something? Go get it.
Be a warrior. Be a goddess. You only have one chance at this — forge your own path. No one will do it for you.
